In the last few years, many types of polarization agile antennas using reconfigurable slot antennas and microstrip antennas have been reported 1-6. These antennas can radiate circular and linear polarizations. However, they require some RF switching devices such as diodes in order to achieve reconfigurability. In this communication, a microfluidically frequency- and polarization-reconfigurable slot antenna using liquid metal (LM) is proposed. The polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) structure with narrow-banded microchannels is loaded on the printed circuit board (PCB) of a square slot antenna, providing condition for reconfiguration. Polarization reconfiguration Polarization reconfigurable antennas are capable of switching between different polarization modes. The capability of switching between horizontal, vertical and circular polarizations can be used to reduce polarization mismatch losses in portable devices. Polarization switchable active antenna can be used in spatial power combiner in the compact size. The reconfigurable antenna proposed in this paper operates at the three different polarizations (Linear, RHCP, and LHCP) with the frequency 2.2 GHz. It has been fabricated on low cost substrate. It can switch the polarization using the PIN diode.

Reconfigurable Polarization Slot Antenna Signal Booster

Abstract

A polarization-reconfigurable slot antenna, for WLAN applications, is presented in this paper. The antenna incorporates a reconfigurable Wilkinson power divider-based feed network, which couples electromagnetic energy to a decagonal slot in the ground plane. The approach, presented herein, is based on electronically reconfiguring the phase difference, between the antenna's feeding ports, to achieve polarization diversity while the antenna is still operable over the desired frequency band. The proposed antenna is designed and simulated using Ansoft HFSS, a Finite-Element-Method based EM solver. The computed return loss, for each case, is better than 10 dB over the 2.4-2.484 GHz frequency range. A prototype of the designed antenna is fabricated and measured. An acceptable analogy between measured and simulated S11 plots is witnessed. For each switching condition, the radiation pattern, axial-ratio and peak gain of the antenna are included herein.

A Polarization Reconfigurable Slot Antenna with a Novel Switchable Feeding Network

Abstract

A polarization reconfigurable slot antenna is proposed in this paper. The antenna consists of a microstrip line-to-slotline transition structure, two radiation slots and a switchable feeding network. The feeding network is a gradually changed ring slot with six switching diodes on it. By controlling the diodes states, the antenna can generate y-direction polarization, z-direction polarization, left-hand circular polarization and right-hand circular polarization. Detailed design considerations of the proposed antenna, simulated and measured results are presented and discussed. Measured results agree well with simulated. The results proved that the antenna can realize polarization reconfiguration effectively at 5 GHz.
